As I suspect many world travelers from the U.S. do, I at one time tended to look on Canada as too tame a place to hold the promise of any real adventure. That was before photographer Chris Cunningham and I trailed a sailboat to the Cree Nation village of Chisasibi, which in 1994 was, and I think still is, as far north as you could go by road in Northern Quebec. Then we sailed north from there into Hudson Bay, assured by Chisasibi sheriff Harry Snowboy that if we didn’t return he’d see that somebody, possibly, him, got the Jeep we were leaving behind. If you have access to old copies of Sail magazine, you can find the story in the May 1995 issue. In the photos, Chris is the one wearing red long-john underwear.
