As a life-long sailor, travel humor writer Bob Payne was disappointed to discover during a week of exploring the Turkish coast in a traditional sailing craft known as a gulet (pronounced goo-LET) that for the most part the gulet’s sails are a decorative feature, and actually raising them is considered to get in the way of more important activities, such as lunch.

The story of Payne’s cruise along the Turkish coast appeared in the December 2000 Conde Nast Traveler.
