New Zealand is a great place to walk, and the most popular walk is along the Milford Track, on the South Island. As I wrote in Islands magazine some years ago, it is, however, far from the most difficult walking track in New Zealand — as might be suspected from the fact that somebody once pushed a piano on wagon wheels 13 miles to one of the few lodges along its route.
