This photo was taken in the Guyana rainforest while I was doing a story that ran in the March 2010 issue of Conde Nast Traveler magazine. Shortly afterwards, as I recalled in the story, something dropped softly onto the back of my neck and I was instantly, painfully, bitten by a hairy brown spider. The bite, it turned out, was not fatal, causing only lopsided swelling of my neck and a welt that lasted for several weeks. Photo by a very reluctant member of the Makushi Indian tribe.
