In Ilulissat, from where I would depart for a journey on the Greenland ice cap with just a local hunter and his 20-dog sled team, I got into conversation at breakfast with an Inuit woman at the Hotel Arctic, where I hoped she didn’t notice that my survival skills demanded I stuff my pockets with hard rolls in anticipation of the trail ahead. I mentioned to her that one of the things I hoped to accomplish on my journey was to learn how to drive a dog team myself. To which she rolled her eyes and asked, “How far can you run, in the snow, wearing boots?”
